Buyer of Piney Point terminals plans UAV testing and site cleanup, speaker says

A company that purchased the Piney Point Terminals plans to test unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and clean up the former petroleum site, a staff member said during a St. Mary’s County meeting.
The Offshore Aviation Group (OAG), the speaker said, has been operating in the area for about eight to 10 years and has long-standing agreements with the U.S. Navy to use airspace. “It’s not going to be a commercial BWI airport,” the staff member said. “That is not what they’re looking to do.”
The speaker said OAG intends to remove an aging pipeline behind the museum that extends into the waterway and to remediate the property. “They’re gonna just clean up the facility there, and that’s a good thing,” the staff member said. The speaker added that OAG has tested UAS in the area previously and expects minimal impact on neighbors.
The speaker described OAG as a potential community partner and said the county should be willing to hear the company’s plans. The speaker also noted a press release by the company approximately one to two weeks earlier had generated interest and some concern in the community.
No formal approvals, permits or votes were announced during the remarks. The speaker presented the information as an update and encouraged community members to learn more from the company as plans progress.
