Jones County Board of Tax Assessors members on Oct. 2 approved 21 motor-vehicle appeals, reviewed the status of ongoing property appeals and accepted staff’s recommendation to roll valuation work into the 2026 tax year.
The action came after staff reported that most outstanding appeals have been worked and forwarded where appropriate to the Board of Equalization (BOE). "We have 29 BOE no changes," a staff member told the board, and staff said 311 appeals were resolved and four were withdrawn. Members voted to roll valuation work to the 2026 year so staff and contractors can begin next year’s field work now that current appeals are largely processed.
Why it matters: the timing affects when revaluation fieldwork is completed and when adjusted values become final for taxpayers who either accept staff determinations or pursue further appeal. Board actions also move a set of unresolved cases into BOE hearings scheduled for October and November, establishing the next steps for taxpayers who pursue formal appeals.
Board actions and numbers reported Staff told the board that technical appraisals staff have completed about 60% of field work for the full revaluation and have been providing recommendations on appeals. The staff member identified "Alan from technical appraisals" as participating and said the contractor "has done 60% of the field work." The staff recommended rolling remaining work forward because appeals processing is essentially complete.
Staff gave several counts during the discussion: the board approved 21 motor-vehicle appeals; staff reported "29 BOE no changes," that 311 cases are resolved, and that four appeals were withdrawn. In one passage the transcript records an unclear sequence of numbers: "We have a hundred and 30, a hundred and 53 30 day notices issued right now," which staff presented without further clarification.
Board votes and motions at the meeting Members moved and seconded several routine items and approvals. The board approved the meeting agenda and Sept. 4 meeting minutes, approved the set of "63 E and R and NODs" referenced by staff, approved the 21 motor-vehicle appeals, and approved the staff motion to roll valuation work to the 2026 tax year. One board member indicated they would recuse themselves from a vote on the E&R/NODs item; the transcript does not identify the member by name.
Next steps and public participation Staff said remaining contested cases are being scheduled for BOE hearings in October and November. If the BOE reduces values, taxpayers have 30 days to appeal to the superior court, the staff member said. No members of the public spoke during the meeting.
The board adjourned after completing the listed agenda items.
