San Francisco — The Federal Highway Administration has obligated $400 million for a seismic retrofit of the Golden Gate Bridge, Executive Director Ting told the transportation authority board at its Sept. 30 meeting. Ting said the funds will be used to retrofit the main towers, install energy dissipation devices on the side spans and strengthen the main spans, and that work is scheduled to begin next year.
Ting thanked supervisors and others who have served on oversight bodies, and framed the obligation as a major federal contribution to a priority safety and resilience project. The board received the report as information; no formal action was taken at the meeting.
Discussion vs. decision: This was an information update. Ting described the planned scope (tower retrofits, energy dissipation devices and main-span strengthening) and the anticipated start next year; the board did not vote on project authorization or funding at this meeting.
Context: The Golden Gate Bridge retrofit was presented alongside other federal and state funding news. Ting noted the board’s gratitude for the obligation and highlighted coordination with elected officials and project partners.
