Forsyth County commissioners voted 6‑1 on Sept. 25 to authorize execution of a contract with Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods (NBN) to continue its gun‑violence prevention program through June 30, 2026, at a county cost not to exceed $273,738.80.
County staff said the contract is covered by existing budgeted funds: remaining city ARPA rollover ($65,000) plus county gun‑violence funds. Commissioners debated whether the county should fund its half when the City of Winston‑Salem would not fully join the current year; one commissioner said she would vote in opposition if the city declines to participate. Vice Chair and others urged the city to return to the table in future budget cycles. Supporters noted the program’s research‑based approach and recommended continuing this fiscal‑year contract to preserve services and data collection; the board approved the contract with one commissioner voting no.
Commissioner expressions during the discussion emphasized two points: the program was already budgeted for the county and has an evaluation that supports its approach, and county leaders want the city to reengage in funding next year. After discussion, the board moved to authorize the contract so the program can continue operating through the fiscal year and collect additional data on outcomes.
