The commissioners approved VanTrust Real Estate Development’s final development plan for a 574,000 sq. ft. industrial building in the New Century Commerce Center; planning staff and the Western Consolidated Zoning Board recommended unanimous approval with stipulations.
Johnson County commissioners on Sept. 25 approved a final development plan for Building C1 at the New Century Commerce Center, a roughly 574,000‑square‑foot industrial facility on about 33 acres adjacent to John Glenn Parkway and Flight Line Drive.
Diane Wicklund of the county planning department said the proposed building matches the architectural style of the four existing buildings in the development and represents the fifth building in the center. ‘‘This building will match the design and architectural style of the 4 existing buildings in this development,’’ Wicklund told commissioners. She said planning staff recommended approval and that the Western Consolidated Zoning Board had unanimously recommended approval with stipulations.
Commissioners praised the private‑public partnership at New Century and noted recent federal investment in airport infrastructure, including a $21 million Federal Aviation Administration grant for Runway 18‑36 reconstruction. Commissioner Allen Brand called the project ‘‘exciting’’ and said the airport area has become a major economic engine for the county.
The motion to adopt the resolution approving the final development plan was moved by Commissioner Allen Brand, seconded by Commissioner Phil Brewer, and passed on roll call by the commissioners present. Planning staff and the applicant will complete the final stipulations required by the zoning board before construction permits are issued.
