Palm Desert public-safety briefing: multi-county robbery arrests, arson arrests and an e-bike safety course

Palm Desert public-safety leaders told the City Council Sept. 25 about three developments: arrests in a regional robbery investigation, recent arson arrests tied to fires in the valley and a planned e-bike safety course for families. Lieutenant Porras reported that Riverside County Sheriff's investigators arrested six suspects believed responsible for a series of 12 robberies across Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties; the investigation was bolstered by recent technology investments, Porras said. Cal Fire Riverside County Fire Department officials described a separate arson investigation. Fire captain specialists Sean Curtis and John May said an investigation of a July 29 restaurant fire on Highway 111 in Palm Desert led to an arrest within 24 hours after origin-and-cause work identified a suspect. Chief Beverland noted the fire bureau has two battalion chiefs and 15 fire captain specialists focused on origin-and-cause work; since the desert program began, he said, there have been 16 arson arrests valleywide. Deputy Paul Abrego, a motorcycle officer sponsored by the city to attend an e-bike instructor course, described a Huntington Beach training program he attended and said Palm Desert will offer a one-hour ebike safety class for middle-school students and their parents on Oct. 18 at the Civic Center parking area by the YMCA. The class will include a braking demonstration, a rules-of-the-road briefing, helmet and charging-safety guidance and participation by safety vendors and Cal Fire, Abrego said. He urged parents to RSVP through the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station. Officials said the e-bike training aims to prevent injuries linked to higher-speed e-bikes and to educate parents about differences between legal e-bikes and e-motorcycles. No formal action was required; the council received the reports and thanked staff for the investigations and the safety outreach plans.
