East Ridge adopts 2023 National Electrical Code to stay within state exemption timeline

The East Ridge City Council approved Ordinance 12-32 on second and final reading Sept. 25 to adopt the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) as the city’s official electrical code.
City staff explained the city is currently using the 2017 NEC and that as an exempt municipality the city must adopt a code within seven years of the most recently published NEC. Staff said adopting the 2023 NEC keeps the city within that statutory timeline and avoids falling out of compliance with state oversight; the next published NEC would be in 2026 and delay would put the city beyond the seven-year window.
Mr. Hale presented a brief recap of the ordinance. Councilmember Ezell moved approval, Councilmember Witt seconded, and the ordinance passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
No substantive amendments were made during the Sept. 25 second-reading vote.
