Coral Springs proclaims Fire Prevention Week 2025, highlights lithium-ion battery safety and Oct. 11 jamboree

The City Commission proclaimed Fire Prevention Week in Coral Springs and heard fire department remarks stressing lithium-ion battery safety and home prevention measures. Fire Marshal Harold Alcalde told the commission the 2025 national theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety — Lithium Ion Batteries in Your Home,” and described problems when lithium-ion batteries “react differently and can create fires.” Alcalde said, “When the batteries are no longer usable, dispose of them properly. Get rid of them. Don't keep them in your home. Don't charge if they start to get hot. If they start to expand, properly dispose of your batteries.” Alcalde and Fire Department leaders announced a public Fire Prevention Jamboree on Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the north parking lot of Coral Square Mall. The event will include family-friendly safety education and a live-fire demonstration comparing a sprinklered container side-by-side with an unsprinklered side to show the effect of automatic sprinklers. The fire marshal also reminded residents to change smoke-detector batteries when clocks change and emphasized community responsibility for fire prevention. The commission proclaimed the week in a unanimous vote and encouraged residents to participate in the city’s fire-safety events.
