The Lafayette Redevelopment Commission approved claims totaling $4,816,249.88 on Sept. 25 and heard staff confirmation that one of the claims was for a final parcel acquisition required for the South Ninth Street project.
A commissioner asked staff about the nature of the acquisition. Redevelopment Director Dennis Carson said the claim was the final parcel the city needed to acquire for the South Ninth Street project; the acquisition went through the condemnation process and the agreed order was paid. Carson said the parcel sits near the project limits between Brick & Wood and BMP and that the project is scheduled to be let for construction in February. He said staff believed the acquisition may have been reimbursed from one of the TIF (tax-increment financing) funds, but he could not confirm that during the meeting.
A motion to approve the claims was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote. No roll‑call vote was recorded.
Why it matters: Claims approval is a routine municipal financial action, but the staff confirmation that the final property acquisition for the South Ninth Street project is complete signals that the city is moving the project toward procurement and construction. The acquisition involved condemnation and an agreed order, and staff indicated the claim is part of the South Ninth Street project closeout of right-of-way needs.
