Joaquin schools outline 10-minute parent-teacher conferences, scheduling steps and portal requirements

Assistant Principal Shianta Myers of Joaquin High School’s Washington campus and Assistant Principal Tanya Evans of Robert Abbott Middle School presented details at a Parent University session about how families should prepare for upcoming parent-teacher conferences.
Myers and Evans said conferences will be 10 minutes and that teachers will provide scheduling links. "Conferences are only 10 minutes. Keep an open mind and partner with the teacher on any next steps moving forward," Assistant Principal Tanya Evans said. Assistant Principal Shianta Myers said, "It is also important that you have Infinite Campus parent portal."
The presentation laid out who will use which scheduling tools and how parents should sign up. For AVID classes, teachers will use Google Calendar invitations so parents can select 10-minute conference slots. Many teachers will use SignUpGenius; presenters said Juarez teachers will use SignUpGenius. At LUIS and at Smith, teams will determine how each school schedules conferences. For AVID and other classes using Google Calendar, the teacher will send the calendar link; for SignUpGenius, teachers will send that sign-up link.
The district advised families at Joaquin High School to scan a QR code to download the Infinite Campus parent portal app; middle-school parents can request parent-portal account information through their school secretaries. Presenters said teachers will send scheduling information and confirmations through the Remind app and that slots are likely to fill quickly.
Waukegan High School, Brookside and the Washington AODC campuses will offer two options: in-person conferences (drop-in or scheduled) or virtual conferences. Presenters emphasized that virtual conferences must be scheduled in advance. Families were instructed to review their child’s grades, recent work and attendance before conferences, write down questions and prioritize which teachers they will try to see because parents may not meet every teacher.
The presenters asked parents to watch for scheduling details in October. They said the regular daily schedule will remain in place during parent-teacher conference days except at the AODC campus, which will follow a modified schedule: an AM session from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and a PM session from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be no school on Friday, Oct. 24.
To help plan future Parent University topics, Myers and Evans asked parents to scan a closing QR code and complete a short form indicating topics of interest.
