Board member raises concerns about College Station students' travel and community volunteers

Little Rock — During board comments at the Sept. 25 special meeting, PCSSD board member Miss Ward praised volunteers from Antioch Church who have supervised a College Station bus stop and urged the district to monitor the effects of extended travel on students' well‑being. Ward told fellow board members volunteers at the church have taken responsibility for watching students when rides are delayed and for notifying the district when a child does not appear at the stop. She said some students are rising about 5:30 a.m. to reach a 6:15 a.m. pickup for routes that travel across the bridge to Fayetteville and expressed concern about how the early schedules and long rides may affect students’ grades and mental health. Ward urged board members to consult students directly about how they feel about the changes and to consider staff and student supports. The superintendent and other board members thanked the volunteers and said the district appreciates community help. The superintendent also said the district is planning one day per month in next year’s calendar for teacher work/staff time to support productivity and wellbeing. No formal action was taken; these remarks were made during the board comment portion of the meeting.
