Board approves YMCA aftercare partnership at elementary schools

The Dixon Unit School District 170 board voted Sept. 24 to approve an aftercare agreement with the YMCA for Jefferson, Washington and Madison elementary schools. Administrators said the partnership began during the COVID pandemic to support families and that the YMCA operates on-site at the home schools so students do not need to be bused to a different location except for certain half days or vacation periods when services are centralized at Jefferson. The board approved the agreement by roll call. The recorded votes were: one trustee abstained, and the remaining trustees voted yes. A district presenter said, “This is something that actually started in COVID. Ways that we could support our parents,” and recommended continuing the partnership at the three sites so families continue to have a local option for aftercare. Board discussion clarified the aftercare stops at fifth grade and that parents who need sibling pickup assistance can have students bused to Jefferson for unified pickup. The presenter noted the program had not required rent increases for the YMCA when it started and recommended continuing the relationship. Recorded votes on the motion: Mister Rogers — abstain; Mister Wadsworth — aye; Mister Fritz — aye; Missus Schafer — aye; Missus Wagner — aye. The motion carried.
