The Mount Vernon Historic Preservation Board voted to approve plans for new two-family frame dwellings at two nearby vacant lots (referred to in the hearing as 28 and 30 Millington Street), subject to conditions intended to add visual differentiation between the paired properties.
The board’s approvals require that each house have a different front-door color from its neighbor and that exterior garage lights be installed on the far side of each garage door to provide consistent driveway illumination. The board said the color choice may be left to the architect and property owner, but requested visible variation so the new buildings do not appear “cookie cutter.”
The architect and developer presented floor plans showing each building would contain three-bedroom units on the first and second floors with a two-car garage at the basement level. One presenter said one lot measures about 5,250 square feet; exterior materials discussed included Hardie board or vinyl siding, dark-gray architectural shingles, black-iron railings and white window frames.
Board members discussed facade materials, lighting placement and door-color choices. A motion to approve the applications with the stated conditions passed by voice vote. The board indicated the conditions are limited to exterior finishes and lighting placement; other design elements will remain as presented.
