The Henry County Commissioners on Sept. 24 approved the sheriff’s office proposal to trade six surplus vehicles to a dealer and order a 2026 Dodge Durango under a trade arrangement. The sheriff’s representative said the six surplus vehicles — a 2020 Charger, two 2021 Durangos, a 2012 Tahoe, a 2014 Tahoe and a 2020 Durango — drew a trade bid of $32,500.
The dealer quoted $42,241 for a 2026 Durango, leaving a net county cost of $9,741 under the trade arrangement. The sheriff’s representative told the board that an insurance settlement of more than $15,000 for a totaled Dodge Ram and about $20,000 remaining in the department’s vehicle purchase line item would be used to cover the cost, and said no additional county appropriation would be requested.
The presenter explained earlier efforts to sell surplus vehicles by bid had not produced acceptable offers and that the dealer provides pickup and delivery services, reducing manpower needs. Commissioners moved and seconded approval; the motion carried 3-0.
Next steps: the sheriff’s office will coordinate with the dealer to trade the six vehicles and place the order for the 2026 Durango, using insurance proceeds and existing vehicle-purchase funds to cover the net cost.
