Board members and Sheriff King discussed the department's armored response vehicle, its recent operational use in a neighboring county incident and plans to display the vehicle at an upcoming public-safety fair. A board member recounted a mission in which a suspect fired an AK-47 and struck an armored vehicle in Jefferson County; deputies used containment tactics and an armored vehicle to support a safe resolution. "...neighboring Jefferson County's armored vehicle took significant gunfire... he hit, Jefferson County's MRAP, their armored vehicle, 6 or 7 times," the board member said, describing a subsequent gas/containment tactic that led the suspect to exit without the weapon.
Board members argued that an armored vehicle provides both tactical capability in high-risk incidents and a strong public-relations tool at community events. The department intends to display the vehicle and other equipment at the upcoming public-safety fair and said equipment demonstrations have been well-received at community events such as the county fair.
Separately, the sheriff and chief discussed expanding social-media outreach to share positive policing work; the chief noted the department's social-media activity had dropped while a member attended training (Quantico) and encouraged additional content creation to highlight positive actions and build public trust. Members agreed that social-media presence is time-consuming and some jurisdictions centrally hire a public-information officer to support the chief.
No board action was taken; the discussion was informational and focused on community outreach and tactical-capability reporting.
