Students showcase AVID and district highlights Year of the Arts; board members praise programs

A Capital High AVID representative, Ayesha Mio Villasantos, told the board that AVID has positively impacted millions of students nationally and explained how the program supports college preparation and student leadership. “This AVID program is so beneficial towards all of us, for college, for success, and for on and for leadership in our schools,” she said.
Assistant Superintendent Jamie Holiday and other board members recognized the program’s tutors, teachers and students; Board Member Heffron said she had served as an AVID tutor and praised students’ dedication. Board members and the superintendent visited Capital High and reported positive observations.
Fine Arts Coordinator Christina Gonzales presented material on the Governor’s proclamation naming the 2025–26 academic year the New Mexico Year of the Arts and Education and described evidence linking arts engagement to attendance, graduation and cognitive benefits. She urged the board and partners to treat the arts as a foundational element of education.
Why it matters: AVID and arts partnerships are district programs designed to improve college readiness, cultural responsiveness and student engagement. Board members expressed support and encouraged program continuation and expansion.
