The Weld County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 24 approved acceptance of a $26,446 award from the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program for the Northern Colorado Regional Forensic Laboratory and authorized the chair and the sheriff’s office to sign contract ID 9934. The board voted in favor during its regular meeting. Ton Mathews of the sheriff’s office described the award and how lab staff will use it. "The lab has been used in the past to train and certify analysts to the regional lab," Mathews said. He told commissioners the funds would pay for three courses focused on digital media evidence — processing cell phones, audio and video — to help address a backlog. Mathews also said the money will support leadership training and examiner training for firearms, DNA and latent prints, and that the grant does not require matching funds. The board approved the contract after a motion from Commissioner Kevin Ross and a second by Commissioner Jason Maxey; commissioners voted aye. No public comment was recorded on the item.
