Council proclaims October 2025 Fire Prevention Week; officials warn about lithium-ion battery risks

Fond du Lac City Council President Tiffany Brault read a proclamation on Sept. 24 declaring October 2025 as Fire Prevention Week and highlighting the local risk from lithium-ion batteries in household electronics.
The proclamation notes that many common household devicesincluding smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, electric bicycles and scootersuse lithium-ion batteries which, if damaged, misused or improperly charged, can overheat, catch fire or explode. The proclamation urged three actions for residents: buy only listed products, charge batteries safely and recycle batteries responsibly.
Fire Chief Garretson (representing Fond du Lac Fire Rescue) spoke briefly at the meeting, thanking the council for its support and saying the local fire department has responded to several lithium-ion battery-related fires in recent years. The proclamation invites the public to an open house hosted by Fond du Lac Fire Rescue and other county departments at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The proclamation is ceremonial; no council action was required. Fire officials asked the public to follow safety guidance and to attend the Oct. 7 event.
