Mann Elementary students demonstrate safety patrol leadership to school board

Mann Elementary students and staff presented a safety patrol showcase at the Sept. 23 Iowa City Community School District board meeting, describing duties, expectations and the leadership skills they practice.
Fifth‑grade teacher Amy Nugent introduced student representatives who explained specific patrol roles: door duty during arrival (07:45–07:55 a.m.) and dismissal (by 3 p.m.); morning and afternoon flag duties with attention to flag etiquette; and teacher‑helper responsibilities in preschool, kindergarten and first grade. Student speakers included Elizabeth Rorta, Lily McConnell, Theo Barrell and Frank Bitterman, who described how safety patrol members are “positive role models” and listed the district’s PBIS values of responsibility, integrity, determination and empathy.
Board response: Directors applauded the students’ presentation. One director said it was among the best education showcases of the year and noted the value of the flag‑raising duties as a life skill. The board session included brief questions but no formal action.
Why it matters: The presentation highlighted the district’s student leadership and school safety practices at the elementary level and gave board members a chance to observe PBIS values in practice.
What students said (selected): “We show responsibility by holding the doors for students to enter,” student Lily McConnell said during the presentation. The students explained that safety‑patrol assignments rotate monthly and that expectations include being punctual, walking quietly and returning to class on time.
What didn’t happen: The showcase was for information and recognition; the board did not vote or change policy based on the presentation.
