Committee hears calls to 'keep fighting' roadside trash; holds landfill cover-loads item

BUTTE-SILVER BOW, Mont. — Commissioners urged continued focus on roadside trash and landfill cover-load requirements at the Public Works Committee meeting Sept. 24, and the committee voted to hold the item pending additional information.
Commissioner Russell Leary, District 5, brought Communication 2025-297 to inform the committee about concerns over roadside trash and the requirement that loads to the landfill be covered. Leary said there had been media posts about the issue and appealed to the public to ‘‘cover your loads’’ when traveling to the landfill.
Commissioner Dan Callahan said he had reached out to an adoptive group that had ‘‘adopted Iron Street’’ and would press that group to resume cleanup. He said he had received about four calls in the previous week about uncovered loads on St. Cloud Road going to the dump and planned to check with the sheriff about citations. Callahan also said he had spoken with the dump operator, Mr. Erwin, who described a photo-ticketing and collections process: an enforcement outfit photographs the vehicle and license plate, issues a ticket, and if the ticket isn’t paid it is turned over to collections.
Commissioner Trudy Healy thanked Director Mark Neary for coordinating cleanup of scrap metal in front of an H & H building, saying she drove by and the area ‘‘looks so much better.’’ She also encouraged residents to pick up litter and described carrying a bucket in her car to collect trash.
After discussion, Healy moved and Callahan seconded a motion to hold Communication 2025-297 (listed in the minutes as 02/1997 in one instance) until the next public works or judiciary meeting. The motion passed on a voice vote.
No regulatory changes or enforcement orders were passed at the meeting. Commissioners discussed partnering with community groups, coordinating with the sheriff’s office, and following up with Community Enrichment Director David Guerry about parking- and cleanup-related logistics.
What happens next: The item is held for the committee to report back with more information on enforcement, group participation in cleanups, and any operational fixes at the landfill or dump.
