Council approves professional services agreement for Western Avenue resurfacing; member raises left‑turn pocket safety concerns

The Stanton City Council approved on consent item 9e awarding a professional services agreement to Engineering Resources of Southern California Inc. for the Western Avenue resurfacing project and approved a cooperative agreement between the City of Stanton and the City of Garden Grove.

Before the consent vote, a council member raised complaints received from the public about vehicle queuing and the length of the left‑turn pocket on Western Avenue where daily queues frequently exceed the capacity of the lane. The member described a recurring situation in which “the left turn lane is too short” and said the signal currently accommodates two or three left‑turning cars per cycle while 10–12 cars may wish to turn, causing cut‑throughs from adjacent driveways and stations.

A public‑works staff representative said design issues would be evaluated during the project design phase. The consent calendar motion to approve the agreement (items 9a–9j except 9e was pulled initially then moved) was made and the council voted in favor; item 9e specifically was moved and passed on the consent calendar.

Staff will incorporate design review and consider left‑turn pocket length during project engineering, the staff response indicated; councilmember concerns were recorded in the meeting record.

No additional project scope changes were adopted at the meeting; approval covered the professional services agreement and cooperative agreement to begin project design and engineering work.
