Peter's Colony Memorial Park nears completion; public-art selection advances

Town staff reported construction progress at Peter's Colony Memorial Park and said they expect substantial completion of the park structure in January, with final landscaping and finishing work to follow.

Parks and Recreation staff member Travis said crews have poured concrete for connector paths and the water wall pad, installed playground equipment and set part of the pavilion frame. "We are super excited that we are getting to a point where we can look to the park being done and ready to open" and noted the left half of a water wall was poured the morning of the meeting.

Travis also provided an update on a related public-art commission. A selection committee that the commission formed earlier evaluated 30 artist submissions, reduced them to a top five and then a top three. Staff are contacting the top three to request concept designs and said they hope to have those designs by the end of the calendar year. The selection committee will review concept proposals and forward a final recommendation to the Town Council for approval.

Why it matters: the park sits adjacent to the library and will add new public amenity space and programming opportunities. The public-art selection is proceeding on a schedule tied to design and installation timelines.

Next steps: staff said they will continue construction toward a substantial-completion milestone in January (date not specified), request concept proposals from the top three artists, and bring a final public-art recommendation back through the selection committee to the Cultural Arts Commission and, subsequently, the Town Council.
