Mayor Shane Taylor proclaimed October 2025 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month for the town of Oakland during the Sept. 23 commission meeting.
Taylor said the designation highlights early detection and community support, noting that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States and affects about one in eight women during their lifetime. "Now, therefore, I, Shane Taylor, mayor of the town of Oakland, do hereby proclaim October 2025 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month for the town of Oakland and encourage all residents to join us in closing observance by promoting awareness, supporting those effective, and participating in adverse decline and cure," he said.
The proclamation frames October as an opportunity for community education and screening outreach. The mayor linked the observance to local actions and encouraged residents to support people affected by the disease and the health-care workers and researchers working on treatments.
The announcement was made near the start of the meeting as part of the agenda's proclamation item; no separate vote or other formal action on the proclamation was recorded in the meeting transcript.
