Cobb honors firefighters after successful extraction and recovery of 10-year-old Evan Davis

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 23 presented certificates recognizing firefighters and emergency personnel for their roles in the March 18 response that helped save 10-year-old Evan Davis.
Commissioner Burrell introduced Evan and the family, and Evan—s mother spoke from the podium, thanking first responders and the medical team at Children—s Hospital of Atlanta: "If they had not gotten there when they had, we wouldn't have our son anymore," she said. The family described a weeks-long medically induced coma and a 10-week inpatient recovery at Children—s Hospital of Atlanta for traumatic brain and other injuries.
Battalion Chief Jeremiah Lewis, who transported Evan—s mother to the hospital, and Engineer Shane Dorfman, the first officer in charge at the scene, received certificates. Battalion Chief Lewis said his crew arrived and immediately recognized the severity: "We knew immediately that it wasn't good." County leaders praised the firefighters— training, coordination and rapid response as instrumental to Evan—s survival and recovery.
The board—s language on the certificate praised Evan—s determination and the crew—s rapid extraction and care. Family members, county officials and fire department leaders posed for photographs; no formal board action or vote was required to present the recognitions.
