Conroe ISD SHAC outlines subcommittees, asks members to sign up

Conroe Independent School District’s School Health Advisory Council spent substantial time at its meeting reviewing standing subcommittees and asking members to indicate interest in leading or joining those groups. Council leaders said much of the council’s work will occur in subcommittees between full SHAC meetings and asked members to complete an email form to sign up.
Chris Povich, the district SHAC coordinator, and returning members outlined the subcommittees that functioned last year and invited volunteers. The list included physical activity and fitness planning; membership; bylaws; compliance; teacher wellness; suicide prevention and mental-health-related work (including substance abuse); and a wellness-plan group that addresses nutrition and food-allergen questions. Members also discussed creating work groups for cell-phone policy follow-up and for active-transportation/safety topics.
David (surname not specified at the meeting) and others summarized subcommittee work from the prior year, noting the physical activity group had focused on whether campuses had the resources and scheduling to meet statutorily required physical-activity minutes and the rollout of new classroom curriculum that affected recess and PE scheduling. The bylaws group flagged a prior effort to amend quorum requirements so that parent quorum could be workable if many parents are absent; the compliance group reviews SHAC adherence to statutes, district policy and bylaws.
The council emphasized process: subcommittees are generally self-managed and use short Zoom meetings or email between the five scheduled full SHAC meetings each year to complete work. The district will email a sign-up form and members were asked to indicate whether they would chair any committee.
Members suggested additional topic areas, including infection prevention and control, environmental health concerns (broadly conceived to include air, water and 5G/cell-related concerns), bicycle and e-bike safety and community-partnered programs such as school gardens or family fitness nights. Povich said he will circulate the subcommittee sign-up form and coordinate initial meetings once volunteers are identified.
The SHAC noted that recommendations produced by subcommittees are forwarded to the district and, where appropriate, to the Conroe ISD board for policy consideration or data requests.
