Upson County names Lonnie Joyce as incoming county manager, starts Oct. 1

The Upson County Board of Commissioners introduced Lonnie Joyce as the county’s new manager at its regular meeting and said Joyce will begin Oct. 1.
The announcement came near the start of the meeting when commissioners invited Joyce forward for a brief introduction and a group photograph. Joyce was described by commissioners as the county’s point person for day-to-day operations and a contact for residents’ service requests.
Why it matters: The county manager runs daily county operations and is the primary staff contact for issues such as roads and other county services. A new manager can change administrative priorities and how the board’s directives are implemented.
At the meeting, Lonnie Joyce said he was “excited for the opportunity” and that he hoped to bring lessons from his work with the city of Thomaston to county operations. Joyce told commissioners, “We’ve done a lot of good things in the city, I think. And I’m excited to bring that to the county and ... work for all the county citizens and the county staff.”
Commissioners welcomed Joyce and noted the position had been vacant since July. Multiple commissioners offered brief remarks of support during the introductions.
No formal vote was recorded for the introduction; commissioners announced a start date of Oct. 1 and encouraged residents to contact the county manager’s office for operational matters. The meeting moved on to regular agenda business after the introduction.
Looking ahead: Joyce’s first official day is Oct. 1, at which point county staff said he will assume daily operational duties.
