Board members discussed edge cases — for example, whether writing on mortar boards, permanent paint or extensive alterations crossed the line, and how to treat cultural items (leis) and expressive but removable items. Trustees asked staff to hold a meeting with the administrators, graduation volunteers and event staff who enforce rules so the district can align enforcement and to bring any policy language changes to a business meeting for formal adoption.
No policy vote occurred at the study session; trustees agreed to return the edited language on the business agenda for formal consideration.
