McAllen Independent School District officials reported Sept. 23 that the district will continue a professional learning partnership with the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) after General Motors pledged $350,000 to sponsor expanded work.
Richard Roberts, the district’s reading and language-arts coordinator, told trustees the summer’s three-day institute for grades 3–10 was well received and that NMSI/General Motors support will fund a continuation of summer institutes plus targeted work during the school year. Roberts said the district must contribute $25,000 to show commitment and sign a letter of intent and an agreement to promote the partnership as part of the sponsorship terms.
The plan includes summer and in-year professional supports for grades 3–12, AP teacher training and leadership training for instructional coaches. Roberts said teacher survey feedback from last year ranked the summer institute among the best training sessions many teachers had attended.
Why it matters: The sponsorship reduces district outlays for teacher professional development, expands content-focused coaching and targets AP and STEM supports intended to improve instruction and student outcomes.
