McAllen ISD releases draft facilities assessment; pre-bond planning services to be solicited

McAllen Independent School District staff presented preliminary findings from a facilities needs assessment and outlined next steps in bond planning at the Sept. 23 board meeting.
Deputy Superintendent Lorena Garcia and Executive Director Ruben Trevino summarized the district’s building inventory and the MGT draft results. Garcia said the district’s inventory spans about 3 million square feet across roughly 31 campuses and that the average building age is 51 years. Trevino presented preliminary capacity and utilization figures and the facility-condition scoring from the consultant’s BASIS analysis.
Preliminary highlights included elementary campuses with high utilization at Gonzales and Milam (noting portables are excluded from the capacity numbers used in the draft), Morris Middle School showing a utilization above 100 percent and McAllen High School listed with substantial portable use. The preliminary combined facility-condition score for the district was presented at approximately 76.22, up slightly from a prior study eight years earlier.
Garcia said the district will advertise and hire a pre-bond planning services firm to help prioritize recommended projects, shape a bond-dollar amount and lead community communications. The district scheduled additional public town-hall engagement and a published survey; a final facilities report from MGT and related site master plans are expected in mid-October.
Why it matters: The assessment and the planned pre-bond work will inform any future voter-authorized bond proposals and prioritize projects such as portable removal, HVAC and roofing, parking-lot work, and classroom additions based on condition and utilization.
