The City Council unanimously approved a master service agreement with Samsara at the Sept. 24 meeting, authorizing expanded GPS/location and fleet‑data services across a larger portion of the city’s vehicle fleet.
Public Works Director Lee and staff said the new system replaces an expiring service and offers more integrated data: trip history, fuel usage, maintenance milestones and a path to integrate optional in‑vehicle video services later. Staff said the system would be rolled out more widely than past use (which focused on solid‑waste vehicles) and that the platform will integrate with the city’s upcoming enterprise asset‑management system.
Council members asked about privacy and contract terms; the city attorney noted that technology companies typically offer standardized agreements and that staff negotiated the minimum legal protections available. The agreement term discussed in the meeting was a five‑year service agreement with standard termination and breach provisions.
Staff said operational benefits could include improved preventative maintenance, easier FEMA documentation in declared events, better proof of service for sanitation calls and the option to add video later as a proof‑of‑service and anti‑harassment tool for crews.
The council voted 5‑0 to adopt the service agreement.
