El Segundo Fire Department volunteers held their annual pancake breakfast at Fire Station 1 on Main Street to honor lives lost on Sept. 11 and to engage the community in fire safety, organizers said.
Organizers described the event as both a remembrance and a community outreach opportunity. "This event is to honor and remember those lives lost during 9 11," a speaker said, noting the breakfast has taken place each year since 2002. Attendees were invited to view fire apparatus, take part in a children’s 'fire safety house' maze and receive giveaways, organizers said. "Every single dollar that is raised is turned back into the community for special causes, for families that have been in need, and they don't keep a dime of it," the speaker added.
Presenters emphasized the event’s role in public education. They said children who participate in school drills bring safety practices home to their families and that the interactive jump house teaches household safety steps. Event volunteers also pointed to the department’s importance during emergencies such as wildfire season and underscored the need for resources to protect residents.
The segment concluded with on-site reporter identification: "For El Segundo Media, I'm Tully Anderson."
