Shelton council members asked staff to pursue a structural analysis of a wood skate park on school district property and to coordinate with Mason County and the school district before making any repair or removal decisions.
Public works staff told council the skate park is aging and the wood structure has shown failures and repeated repairs. Staff proposed a $7,500 structural analysis to determine whether the facility is salvageable, what repairs would cost, and whether continued maintenance is reasonable. Council members noted the skate park sits on school district property under a three‑party interlocal agreement and that the county previously contributed some maintenance funding.
Council discussion cited safety, liability and site access concerns; staff said the school district had expressed reluctance to host the facility long term and that parking and daytime unsupervised use had created operational issues. Some council members said the city should explore options before committing funds for major repairs; others argued it is responsible to determine structural viability in order to inform whether to fund repair, removal or replacement.
Council asked staff to (1) obtain the structural analysis, (2) coordinate with Mason County and the school district on willingness to retain the facility or accept removal, and (3) look for grants or partner funding for repair or replacement. Staff said they would attempt to find low‑cost or donated engineering support if possible before budgeting the full analysis cost.
