Shelton council members and staff discussed the status of MACECOM, the regional 9‑1‑1 dispatch consortium, during the Sept. 23 budget study session. Staff said MACECOM has identified substantial technology and facility needs and that earlier proposals included as much as a $200,000 increase to partner agencies; since then MACECOM has revised needs but may still request higher contributions from member agencies.
City staff said MACECOM currently occupies space at the civic center and plans for upgrades — including equipment replacement and improved workspace — rely on partner contributions, potential grants and state 9‑1‑1 funding. Staff said MACECOM’s request is still under development and that the city included a $100,000 placeholder in the 2026 proposed budget, with a possible $50,000 ongoing allocation depending on MACECOM’s final plan.
Council members asked whether county and tribal partners would share costs. Staff responded that every partner agency (law enforcement and fire agencies) typically pays its share and that state 9‑1‑1 funds and federal grants may be available; council members urged staff to pursue grants and legislative appropriations as part of the funding strategy.
No final commitment was made. Staff said they will continue coordination with MACECOM, quantify options for the council, and look for grant opportunities and partner contributions before returning a final recommendation to council.
