The Mission City Council unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing the Mission Fire Department and the Firefighters Association for their participation in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Fill the Boot campaign.
Fire Chief Silva presented the proclamation, saying the department’s participation raises funds and highlights firefighters’ commitment to community service. Jennifer (last name not provided), a mother who said her son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at age 4, addressed the council and described the impact of MDA-funded research and services on her family. She told the council: “It means the world and there could never be enough gratitude, for you guys that allow it and for these guys that go out there,” and thanked firefighters for giving “one more day” and hope for families.
Chief Silva said the department will resume street collections for MDA and asked the council to consider making the first donation; he also introduced firefighters and family members present for a photograph. The council voted 5-0 to approve the proclamation.
The proclamation recognizes the department’s fundraising for MDA and encourages community participation in Fill the Boot activities; the department will coordinate the drive and report fundraising results to the council and MDA as required.
