Rebecca Zalet, a member of the Palmyra Revitalization Committee, asked borough council for permission to begin fundraising to install a “Welcome to Palmyra Borough” sign at Mayor’s Park, the small triangular park at Langel and Main Street. Zalet said the committee consists of borough residents, business owners and service organizations and that the group would fund, install and maintain the sign if the borough permits fundraising and placement at the park.
The nut graf: Council members welcomed the idea but asked the committee to coordinate with borough staff before committing funds so the borough can confirm what site work, design limitations and maintenance needs exist; council members repeatedly said they prefer a planned design and clarity on any additional site work (for example, adjustments to the hillside that borough public works already finds difficult to maintain).
Committee representative and next steps: Zalet said the committee has contacted at least one local sign company and would prefer to support a local business, but it has not finalized a design. Council asked that the group meet with borough staff (Roger and Brenda were identified in the meeting as staff contacts) to determine whether site preparation or ongoing maintenance would be required and whether any permits or formal agreements will be needed before fundraising and installation proceed. Zalet said the committee would report back with more concrete cost and design options.
Ending: Council members encouraged the committee to apply for grants if applicable, attend a future council meeting with a design, and said the borough would provide feedback about what changes at the park would reduce public‑works maintenance burdens.
