Revitalization committee seeks permission to fundraise for 'Welcome to Palmyra' sign in Mayor’s Park

Rebecca Zalet, speaking as a member of the Palmyra Revitalization Committee, asked council for permission to begin fundraising to install a “Welcome to Palmyra Borough” sign in Mayor’s Park at the corner of Langel and Main Street. Zalet said the volunteer committee — made up of borough residents, business owners and service-organization representatives — plans to fund the sign, pay for installation, and maintain it without borough capital funding. She said the committee is still in the information‑gathering phase and has not selected a design or contractor. Council members welcomed the idea but repeatedly asked the committee to return with concrete design proposals and to coordinate with borough staff about site maintenance. One councilor said the park’s existing mound (a planting area) is hard for public-works staff to maintain and asked the committee to incorporate any maintenance‑reducing design features into plans. Zalet said the committee would meet with borough staff to identify site needs and potential additional work before raising funds. Councilors also encouraged the group to consider local vendors for fabrication and to explore grants or collaborative funding with service organizations. The committee is not yet an incorporated organization; Zalet said members represent other organizations and residents and would pursue a formal structure as projects advance. Council provided informal approval for the committee to begin fundraising, contingent on further coordination about design and maintenance and a future presentation to council with details.
