JB Nelson celebrates "Wishtree" campaign to build belonging and family literacy

JB Nelson Elementary staff presented the board with a summary of a schoolwide belonging campaign based on the children’s book Wishtree. Ashley (reading specialist) and Nicole Prentice (principal) told trustees each family received a copy of Wishtree, and the library director, Caitlin Fink, recorded staff and community volunteers reading each chapter so families could listen to the book online. The recordings were linked to Google Classroom and a virtual bookshelf so families can access chapters in English; staff said they are exploring subtitles or translations for families who do not speak English. Teachers performed a kickoff skit for students, installed a growing mural in the LRC, created a courtyard “wish tree” with students’ wishes on pieces of fabric, and ran weekly chapter-themed riddles and trivia with small prizes. The program’s culminating event is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.; the board was invited to attend. Presenters said the campaign is intended to foster a sense of belonging, build family literacy practices and support the district strategic plan’s emphasis on parent partnerships. Speakers provided concrete outreach details: weekly trivia and virtual read-aloud links, prize incentives (a $20 book fair certificate and future kits), and bilingual access as a planned follow-up. The board received the presentation during the Celebrating Successes portion of the agenda.
