Commissioners endorse inclusion in Denver-region Economic Development District to access federal EDA resources

The Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 23 to endorse Douglas County’s inclusion in a Denver-region Economic Development District being formed by the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG). Staff said the designation would make DRCOG eligible for grant funding from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to fund technical assistance, outreach and implementation of a regional comprehensive economic-development strategy.
Background: Staff said the designation enables the region to pursue EDA grants and provide technical support to jurisdictions, including smaller and more remote communities. The board read and adopted a resolution endorsing inclusion and noted that the designation would augment but not replace local economic development corporations.
Action taken: The board approved the resolution of support; the vote was unanimous. County staff and commissioners said the designation will help Douglas County pursue federal economic-development resources it has not previously accessed.
Next steps: DRCOG will move forward with EDA designation processes and, if approved by the EDA, the region will become eligible to apply for relevant grant programs and technical assistance.
