The Story County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 23 approved Resolution 26-22 expressing the board’s support for the City of Huxley’s voluntary annexation of two parcels totaling about 3.9 acres along Highway 210, including a narrow strip of right-of-way owned by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).
Staff reported that the annexation involves two parcels adjacent to Interstate 35 near the intersection with Highway 210 in Union Township. The City of Huxley previously petitioned to annex adjacent parcels owned by private parties; the state review indicated the DOT-owned right-of-way also needed to be included to avoid creating an island. Staff recommended approval of Resolution 26-22 to avoid creating a jurisdictional island and to align municipal and right-of-way boundaries.
The board voted to approve the resolution following a motion and second; the record shows the supervisors voting aye. Staff clarified that the annexation does not transfer ownership of the DOT right-of-way to the city; the land remains owned by the DOT and is being included in the annexation to maintain contiguous municipal boundaries.
There were no public objections recorded at the board meeting on this item. The action is advisory in the sense that the resolution states the board’s support for the annexation; the City of Huxley and state DOT actions govern legal effect and implementation.
The board adopted Resolution 26-22 on a voice vote (all supervisors present voting aye).
