The Tulare County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 23 read a proclamation recognizing September 2025 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and commended the local nonprofit Leland’s Legacy for supporting families facing pediatric cancer.
Supervisor Dennis Townsend presented the proclamation to Taryn Hensley, who founded Leland’s Legacy after her son Leland Axel Hensley died on Dec. 13, 2023. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to each member of the board for proclaiming September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Tulare County,” Hensley said. “This recognition means the world to families and children affected by childhood cancer.”
The proclamation text, read aloud by the board, noted that cancer remains a leading cause of disease-related death among children and said only about 4% of federal cancer research funding is allocated to pediatric cancer research. It commended local nonprofit efforts that provide financial and emotional support and urged residents to support awareness, research and family assistance.
The proclamation was dated Sept. 23, 2025, and the transcript indicates it was presented and signed by board members. Hensley stood with family members during the presentation and board members invited the family to take photos after the reading.
No formal policy or budget action was associated with the proclamation; it serves as a formal recognition and public encouragement to support affected families and advocacy efforts.
