Board approves FFA overnight events; Elkhorn chapter reports national honors and contests

The Elkhorn Area School District board approved the FFA chapter’s package of overnight events and contests for the school year during its Sept. 22 meeting. David Cruz, identified as an agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, outlined a calendar that includes leadership conferences in November and January, advocacy work at the Wisconsin FFA Day on the Hill, multiple contests in April and the national FFA convention (date not specified) where local students will participate. Cruz told the board two students are qualifying for the American FFA degree — the organization’s highest student honor — and that Ava Nelson was selected to the national FFA honors band, a first for the chapter in the advisor’s 30 years. Cruz also said the local FFA alumni and supporters group was named a national finalist for an outstanding alumni chapter award; final results had not been announced. Cruz explained logistical arrangements: the chapter shares bus transportation with nearby Walworth County chapters (Belvin, East Troy, Badger and Clinton) to reduce costs; some contests require overnight stays because they are hosted at distant campuses such as UW–River Falls and the Wisconsin Envirothon in Rosholt. After questions about travel logistics and collaboration, a motion to approve the FFA overnight travel request was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Cruz asked the board to note that the events provide career exposure, leadership development and competitive opportunities for students. The board accepted the presentation and approved the travel package without recorded amendments.
