Mayville approves $1,700 application to DNR to remove artificial wetland at Slag Road compost site

The City of Mayville approved payment of $1,700 to file a wetland exemption application with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for a portion of the Slag Road compost site. City staff presented the wetland delineation maps at the finance committee meeting and said a yellow‑lined area on the delineation report likely represents an artificial wetland created by prior grading. The consultant indicated the city could seek an artificial exemption from the DNR that would remove that area from wetland designation and allow the public works department to use it for compost fill. The finance committee approved the expense for the DNR filing after staff said the delineation work will clarify where DPW crews may push compost and where they must avoid wetlands. The committee was told that standard delineation approvals are valid for five years. Committee members recorded the vote in favor; staff said the consultant was confident the DNR exemption could be obtained. The city will proceed with the filing and then await DNR review before using the newly delineated area for compost placement.
