Mayville committee advances ordinance to allow single‑day mobile food permits

The City of Mayville’s public safety committee voted Sept. 22 to recommend repealing and replacing the municipal code section that governs mobile food vendor permits to allow single‑day permits for vendors at events. Staff told the committee the change responds to recent requests for one‑day event permits so food trucks and similar vendors can operate at festivals, customer appreciation events and other temporary gatherings without obtaining a seasonal or annual license. The staff presentation said the proposed change would limit single‑day permits to events and festivals — not regular, unpermitted parking in private lots intended to test business operations. Committee members discussed private‑property arrangements such as factory on‑site vendors and noted that farmer’s‑market vendors who do not prepare food are not governed by the mobile food vendor provision. Staff said a placeholder fee of $50 was being proposed for a one‑day permit (the seasonal permit fee is $125) and that the ordinance language and fee schedule will be finalized before council consideration. The motion to repeal and replace Section 195‑3(c) of the municipal code as drafted was approved in committee; the item will be presented to the full council in October for final action.
