Mayville authorizes staff to negotiate EMS contracts with Elmira and surrounding communities

The City of Mayville voted Sept. 22 to authorize city staff and Mayville EMS representatives to negotiate emergency medical services contracts with the Village of Elmira and with other surrounding communities. The public safety committee approved the motion by roll call and the measure carried. The authorization directed City Administrator Stephanie and representatives from Mayville EMS (identified in the meeting as Julie and Devin) to pursue negotiations on service terms and coverage. Committee members said the step is intended to allow the city to finalize contract terms without returning to the committee for each negotiation step. City alderpersons recorded on the roll call as voting in favor included Alderperson Newman, Alderperson Henkel, Alderperson Smith, Alderperson Lisonbee, Alderperson Olsen, Alderperson Baker and Vikram Schmeicher. The committee made a separate, identical motion extending the same negotiation authority for outreach to additional surrounding communities; that motion also passed by roll call. Discussion at the meeting focused on giving staff the authority to negotiate; no contract terms, rates or legally binding agreements were reported during the meeting. No vote or final contract was presented or approved at the meeting itself. The committee took no additional formal actions such as setting a deadline for completed negotiations or specifying minimum service terms. The city will return to the council when specific contract proposals are ready for approval.
