Students, parents and new student representatives highlight start of school, kindness and school life

At the start of the Sept. 24 board meeting, parent Kristen Koch told the Board of Education she supported a letter from interim Superintendent Argenio that urged humanity and respect in the community. "At its heart, this letter is about humanity, kindness, and teaching our children to think critically while treating others with respect," Kristen Koch said during the public-comment period. The board also formally welcomed two new student representatives, Jocelyn and Maeve. Jocelyn, identified herself as a high-school senior, and summarized early-year activities at Willow Avenue, saying, "We are so happy to be back to school at Willow Avenue." She described the kindness crew, classroom activities and open house events. Maeve provided updates from Cornwall Central High School, citing a ribbon-cutting for Dragon Stadium, new student-engagement patterns since a cell-phone policy change, and increased extracurricular interest. She and Jocelyn suggested student ideas — including options to avoid unnecessary food waste by allowing milk or fruit choices and procedural suggestions to speed cafeteria lines — and a proposed October pumpkin-carving fundraiser. Board members encouraged continued student participation at meetings and thanked the students and Ms. Argenio for community events such as the stadium ribbon-cutting.
