The Stonecrest City Council on Sept. 22 voted 5–0 to authorize staff to apply for the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant to construct walking trails inside Salem Park and Farrington Park. A staff presenter told the council the maximum RTP award is $200,000 and that the program requires at least a 20% local match. City Manager Scruggs and parks staff clarified these trails are internal to the parks and are part of the parks master plan rather than the city's bike/pedestrian trails outside parks. Under the city's financial management policy, grant applications that require a local match must be approved by the council before submission; staff said if the city receives an award, council will receive a separate acceptance resolution to approve the match and accept the funds. The council approved the application so staff can proceed with a November 1 application deadline. Staff said, if awarded, the city has two years to complete the project and will be ready to begin when funds are received.
