Roxborough Elementary highlights attendance efforts, community supports and SEL work

Roxborough Elementary staff told the North Syracuse Board of Education on Sept. 22 that they are implementing a fuller MTSS model, are using diagnostic assessments to guide instruction and are leveraging community partners to support families and student needs.
The Roxborough presenter (name not provided) told the board that the building added several special programs this year that brought about 35 students into the school. On attendance, the presenter said the school's chronic absenteeism was 24% and that the school has made progress with individual families, citing an example of a student who reduced missed days from roughly 100 to about 50 in one year.
Roxborough reported AIMSWEB spring 2025 reading proficiency at 37.6% (a slight decline of 1 percentage point), while New York State assessment scores showed an average 6% increase. For math, AIMSWEB spring 2025 proficiency was 38.2% (a slight year-over-year decrease), and NYS math scores showed an average 10% increase; the presenter attributed part of the discrepancy to the difference between building-wide, computer-based AIMSWEB data and grade-level, teacher-administered state assessments.
The school emphasized SEL work and community partnerships: ‘‘We continue with PBIS and the Positivity Project," the presenter said, and noted a four-percentage-point improvement in the social-awareness SEL competency (down from 20% high-risk to 16% high-risk). Roxborough described frequent SEL instruction, morning mindful messages, restorative circles and small-group counseling.
Roxborough detailed a long list of community supporters and events: ProAct, Saint Margaret's food pantry (serving about 30 families monthly), Dee's Diner, Cicero Methodist Church, Matty Dale Market, North Star Nutrition, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Kinney Drugs, Valentine Gardens, Driver's Village (donated 100 backpacks), and other local contributors. The presenter said family engagement events this year included a wellness/book fair night, a family fun night attended by about 92 families (250 people), transition breakfasts to meet next-year teachers, a "cooking with Conrad" workshop and a grab-and-go clothing and supply event on a half day.
The presentation was informational; the board had questions about data differences and praised the school's community outreach. There were no formal votes tied to the presentation; staff will present follow-up items as part of the BPT schedule.
