Hilliard City Council heard a brief statement on Sept. 22 recognizing National Roundabouts Week. City staff noted the Federal Highway Administration designates a week each September to highlight the safety and efficiency benefits of roundabouts.
Staff said roundabouts are designed to keep traffic moving at 15–25 miles per hour and cited studies indicating roundabouts can reduce fatal and serious crashes by more than 80% compared with traditional intersections. Staff also said roundabouts reduce vehicle idling, lowering fuel use and emissions, and create safer crossings for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Staff reminded drivers to slow when approaching roundabouts, read signs to choose the correct lane, yield to traffic already inside the roundabout and to yield to people walking and bicycling at crosswalks.
