ATHENS, Ala. — The Athens City Council on Sept. 22, 2025, approved an amendment and extension to the city's contract with Athens Limestone Animal Services (ALAS), which provides veterinary services, shelter maintenance and spay/neuter and euthanasia services for the city. The resolution notes the current contract would otherwise expire Sept. 30, 2025, and that city officials negotiated an amended contract to continue services while studying longer-term options. The resolution passed by roll call, 4 yeas, 0 nays. Council members and staff said there is no increase in the amendment compared with the prior year and that the city should form a small working group with Limestone County to develop a long-range plan rather than renewing year-to-year indefinitely. The contract text referenced Dr. Jorge Costa and Dr. Elizabeth O'Connor as the veterinarians associated with Athens Limestone Animal Services. Council described the extension as a near-term solution while staff and elected officials explore cost-effective, beneficial long-term arrangements for animal control services.
