The Board of Island County Commissioners on Sept. 23 adopted resolution C52-25 proclaiming October 2025 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month and encouraged employers, schools and community organizations in Island County to build inclusive workforces. Commissioner Johnson moved the resolution; the motion was seconded by the Board Chair and adopted by the commissioners present.
The board cited the nationwide theme of "Celebrating Value and Talent" and noted that Island County has more than 75 employers who currently hire people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. "This year's nationwide theme is celebrating value and talent," Commissioner Johnson read as part of the resolution. Johnson also described the personal and community benefits of employment, saying her niece "loves going to work and having a purpose."
The resolution says the county values the contributions of people with disabilities and that workplaces should offer inclusion and opportunity for all. Commissioner Johnson thanked community partners and employers and the board thanked Mike Gutzel for bringing the proclamation forward.
The board also noted an upcoming resource fair on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Coupeville High School where people can connect with local and regional disability agencies and lifespan support resources. The proclamation was adopted Sept. 23, 2025.
No formal implementation steps were required by the resolution beyond encouraging community organizations and employers to increase inclusion and opportunity during October 2025.
